영어 유/무성 동화의 최적성이론 분석

Abstract

이 논문의 목적은 영어에서 일반적으로 나타나는 유/무성 동화현상(voicing assimilation)에 대한 명시적 설명을 제시하는 데 있다. 영어에서 단일형태소 (monomorpheme) 안에서 장애음이 연속(obstruent consonant clusters)으로 나타날 경우 이들의 유/무성 자질(voicing feature)은 (1)에서처럼 반드시 일치하여 나타난다.

The purpose of this paper is to provide an explicit formal account for English Voicing Assimilation in obstruent clusters. The observations can be summarized in the following. First, obstruent clusters within a single morpheme agree in voicing; ex, chapter, adze, ask. Second, the same type of voicing agreement can be seen in obstruent clusters occurring across morphemes; ex, book+s, love+d, left+t. Finally, not all cross-morphemic obstruent clusters display agreement in voicing; ex, dis+grace, hard+ship, birth+day.
