Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the semantic mechanism of subjunctive in contemporary English. From a guillaumian perspective, the mood system in English is created by the chronogenesis, namely spatial representation of time. In this theory of Psychomechanics, the mood is defined by the nature and the quality of viewing idea. The opposition of indicative/subjunctive corresponds to the opposition of actual/virtual. The choice of mood is generally depends on the fact of tongue like lexical, syntactical, and grammatical elements. But the intensional meaning of speaker plays more important and primordial role.
