Abstract
This paper firstly deals with all the present situations of Korean language education, secondly the assessment method, and finally further development of assessment methods.

It focuses on the Higher School Certificate Examination Korean Background Speakers course.

Korean language education

In Australia, we have a range of schools to accommodate students who are willing to learn Korean. This is based on their motivation and their level of language skills.

These schools include church, private, primary, and government secondary schools.

About 1800 students have been enrolled within these schools in New South Wales this year.

University entrance examination in Australia

Every student willing to enter a university has to take an external examination called HSC (Higher School Certificate) External Examination

The Korean Language is a HSC subject and as a result a general HSC examination rule applies on HSC Korean Language Assessments,

Korean Language as one of the HSC subjects

Students who have chosen Korean Language as one of their HSC examination subjects have to learn it based on the following 'Themes' developed by the New South Wales Board of Studies as Stage 6 Syllabus during Year 11 and Year 12.

1. The individual and the communities (the impact of a changing society on the individual, gender in today's society, the family in contemporary society)

2. Youth culture (pressures on young people today, the influence of leisure on the young people's world, the place of education in young people's world)

3. Cultural identity (reconciling traditional and contemporary Korean culture, North and South Korean relations, Australian and Korean perspectives on lifestyle and culture)

4. Global issues (the global impact of mass media, environmental concerns, the impact of information and technology)

In addition, Year 12 students learn following prescribed texts because it is the requirement of the New South Wales Board of Studies for HSC Korean language examination

1. Song: '10 years' promise', 'Anti green peace life', 'Comeback home'

2. Poem: 'Sungbuk Dong Pigeon', 'Nostalgia'

3. Novel: 'Whisper Whisper', 'Winter 1964'

4. Film: 'Seopyeonje', 'the Contact'

A total of four (4) fields Speaking, Listening, Reading, and Writing are assessed in HSC Korean Language Examination. These are common areas assessed in other HSC language tests.
