Abstract
For the Baccalaurat (General Certification of Education), students have the possibility to choose Korean language as an optional test Nevertheless, if the student has been studying in a French high school for less than 2 years, he may take, with derogation, Korean language as one of the 2 compulsory languages.



There are two types of examination, for every optional test:

1 - oral examination, for the languages studied in French high schools,

2 - written examination, for those not studied in French high schools.



There are two categories of languages that may be chosen as a second language:

1. all languages studies in French high schools, but English, German, Spanish and Italian, like French regional languages, Chinese, Japanese, classic Arabic, Greek, Polish, Portuguese, etc.

2. all languages not studied in French high schools, which are about thirty, like Korean, Turkish, some African languages, Persian, etc.



Regarding the optional tests, if the grade exceeds 10, it is added to the whole grade. If, on the contrary, it is below 10, it is not taken into account



Students must pass a written exam for Korean language which evaluation conditions and criterions are determined by the French Ministry of National Education, as follow:

Examination titre: 2 hours;

Quantity: A4 sheet, 20-30 lines;

Text level: High school level;

Choice of texts: Excerpt of school handbooks, novels, short stories, newspapers and magazines;

Conditions:

- In standard modern language, without neither technical nor specialized vocabulary. In unavoidable cases, the vocabulary must be explained in the native language. In case of Korean, Chinese characters must be avoided except for a homophone, in order to help the candidate;

- Shall be avoided all texts which content refers to certain conflictual historical aspects or to an animosity towards a foreign country. A Korean text should not include any hostile comment on Japan, for example;

- Texts, which might hurt the candidates' conscience or sensibility, should be excluded as well;

- Subjects which are too traditional or academic must be avoided since candidates do not have the cultural and linguistic acquired knowledge (as they were not taught the evaluated language);

- The examination is divided into 3 questions:

Translation from Korean to French (8-10 lines, 6-8 points);

Text comprehension (2 questions);

Personal expression (2 questions)

The last two questions count for 12 points and, if necessary, there might of 3 instead of 2.

Since the present French evaluation is determined for a large number of languages, one cannot require an appraisal system well adapted to the Korean language. Nevertheless, we shall take the following points into account:

- There shall be an oral and a written examination;

- Grammar, vocabulary and writing should be tested;

- Reading, listening and speaking capacities should be tested;

- Knowledge of the standard language as well as transcription of Korean words in Latin alphabet, or foreign words in Korean should be tested;

- There is a necessity to establish the teaching of Korean language in French high schools.



As long as there are no ideal criterion or means of language appraisal, one shall not have an absolute fate in it. Prior to discuss this subject, we should establish a long-term language teaching policy from kinder garden schools to high schools. We should be aware of the significance of language ever since the youngest age, and we should teach it as correctly as possible, This will be the most ideal appraisal that we shall find.
