Current State and Methodology of Chinese Music Research in Mainland China

Abstract

Following the increasing academic exchanges between mainland China and the outside world in recent years, the state of mainland Chinese research into Chinese music has become better known than ever among academic communities outside China. However, for a full understanding of the mainland Chinese situation, more work needs to be done. In this paper I review the current state of mainland Chinese research into Chinese music. Emphasising research approaches and methodology, I seek to summarise the merits and shortcomings evident in such study in mainland China. It should be noted that, as a short conference paper this brief review is by no means thorough and comprehensive. My hope is that this review will nevertheless provide new insights into the current state of mainland Chinese research into Chinese music. Chinese music research in mainland China can be viewed from three aspects: fields of research, developments in these fields, and methodology applied in these fields. My discussion will be mainly focused on the third of these aspects.

최근 중국 본토와 외부세계 사이의 학문적 교류가 증가함에 따라, 본토에서의 중국음악 연구 현황이 재외 학계에 어느 때보다도 많이 알려지게 되었다. 하지만 본토의 상황을 좀 더 갚이 이해하기 위해서는 더욱 많은 작업이 필요하다. 이 글에서 필자는 중국 본토의 중국음악 연구 현황을 살펴보려 한다. 연구의 접근 방법이나 방법론에 무게를 두면서, 본토의 이러한 연구가 갖는 장점과 한계들을 정리하겠다. 그러나 학술회의 발표용의 이런 짧은 글로는 결코 완전하고 종합적인 검토가 이뤄질 수 없음을 미리 밝혀둔다. 그럼에도 이 글이 중국 본토의 중국음악 연구 현황에 대한 새로운 조망을 마련하는 계기가 될 수 있기를 희망한다. 중국 본토의 중국음악 연구는 세 가지 측면에서 살펴볼 수 있다. 연구의 분야, 각 분야의 발달사, 그리고 각 분야에 적용되는 방법론이 그것이다. 필자의 논의는 주로 세 번째, 방법론에 집중될 것이다.
