Standing on the World of "In Between" A Quest of Modernity in the World of Music

Abstract

The word modern in all of its implications might not make any confusions to those people who live in a modern society or country with such a forwarding standard of economic development and super high technology - two factors mostly related to the word modern - such as the USA, most of European countries, Japan or Korea, where people are being used with the daily operations of modern life style. It is, however, obviously different when we imply the same word in some countries, probably even at the largest part of the world, which still have so many difficulties with the progression of so-called modem civilization. Is modern just a life style, a certain level of high enreachment of human civilization - a certain cultural standard of utopia mundi, or is it just simply an ignorable phenomenon of a shining world materialism? The sense of modern and modernization is in fact not quite the same from time to time and from place to place.

여러 가지 함의를 갖고 있는 근대(modern)라는 말은, 미국이나 유럽국가 대부분, 일본이나 한국 등 근대 사회 또는 국가에 살면서 고도의 경제발전과 초고도의 과학기술-근대 하면 연상되는 두 요소-을 누리고 근대적 일상의 방식에 익숙해진 사람들에게는 혼란을 일으킬 여지가 없다. 그러나 같은 말을 아마도 세계의 훨씬 많은 부분을 차지하면서 이른바 근대문명의 발전에 아직까지 어려움을 겪는 다른 국가들에 쓰면 사정이 다르다. 근대는 그저 삶의 양식, 고도의 인간문명 단계, 문화적 지상낙원인가, 아니면 화려한 세계적 물질주의 속의 보잘 것 없는 현상에 불과한 것일까? 근대와 근대화의 의미는 사실 시간과 장소에 따라 전혀 같지만은 않다.
