History, Values and Trends in the Renewal of Musical Studies in Italy

Abstract

In order to understand history, values and trends of musical studies in Italy, one must consider certain fundamental aspects: 1. The necessity to distinguish, within the generic expression musical studies, between the two components of instrumental instruction and musicological studies. Instrumental instruction (which I will call from now on musical studies tout court), is something one can pursue at the Conservatory of Music and will be the object of this exploration. Musicological studies, on the contrary, fall within the competence of Universities. I think there's the need of this distinction both for clarity of expression and because it effectively reflects that dichotomy between musicological intelligence and the ability to play an instrument, which has always characterized the musical education in Italy. Of course, there are some exceptions: among these, the Schools of Didacticism of Music part of the Conservatory of Music, in which musicological aspects (the teaching of Musical pedagogy, for example) are melded with instrumental competence (Practice of vocal and pianistic sight reading, which consists of the reading of vocal and pianistic repertoire at the piano).

음악학 연구(musicological studies)라는 두 요소를 구분할 필요성, 기악교습(이하, 그냥 음악연구라 한다)은 음악 콘서바토리에서 추구할 수 있는 것으로, 바로 이 글의 주제이다. 반면, 음악학적 연구는 대학의 몫이다. 표현의 정확성을 위해, 그리고 그래야 음악학적 지성과 악기 연주능력이라는 이분법을 효과적으로 반영할 수 있기 때문에도, 이 두 가지는 구별할 필요가 있다고 생각한다. 물론, 몇 가지 예외는 있다. 음악 콘서바토리 내 음악교육학부에서는 음악학적 측면(예를 들어 음악교수법)이 기악 연주능력(시창과 피아노 초견은 성악과 피아노 악보를 읽는 훈련으로 짜여 있다)이 뒤섞여 있는 것이 좋은 보기다.
