Fieldwork, Ownership, and Exploitation: Lessons from Taiwan

writing about his unwilling involvement with the techno group Deep Forest, Hugo Zemp correctly observed that "More and more, ethnomusicological research and commercial exploitation are getting intertwined" (1996:36). Zemp warned that with the entry of field recordings into the "web of the world market ... it will not help to seek refuge in the ivory tower of pure, disinterested knowledge" (ibid 53). Sonic hunters and gatherers have made ethnomusicological field recordings one of the primary targets of their explorations. The traditional music of Taiwan aboriginal singers provided the basis for one of the most commercially successful of these musical quests. In this article, I report on a tangled web which involved a Han Chinese ethnomusicologist and his field recordings, several Taiwan aboriginal singers, and an elite, first-world musician.

(앞의 책 53쪽)라고 경고하였다. 음향 탐구자나 채집가들은 그들 탐색의 근본 목표 중에 하나로서 민족음악학적 현지 레코딩을 만들어 왔다. 타이완 원주민 가수의 전통음악은 이러한 음악적 탐색의 가장 상업적 성공 중 하나에 기반을 제공한다. 이번 논문에서 필자는 한족 민족음악학자와 그의 현지 녹음 기록들과 몇몇 타이완 원주민 가수들 및 엘리트이자 기존 선진 음악가가 뒤엉켜 포함된 것에 대해 보고할 것이다.
