The Sacred and the Profane in Korean Shamanistic Music Music of Three Shamanistic Traditions in Central Korea

Abstract

The Korean shamanistic ritual, called kut, is a cumulation of various cultural assets; philosophy, literature, fine arts, dance, and music. Among these elements, music is the core element because the deities for whom the kut is held for are invoked, entertained, and parted by the shaman's music. Without music, the deities cannot exist at the ritual site. In this paper, I will investigate the relationship between music and religiosity in Korean shamanism. Korean shamanistic music shows different traits - strict formality or artistic creativity - in accordance with its function and usage and with the region: in fact, the nature of the shaman. My study is focused especially on the central region of Korea, Seoul and Kyonggi-do Province, where spirit-descended and hereditary shamans coexist and where different styles of shamanistic musics are performed.

한국 샤머니즘의 의식인 굿은 철학, 문학, 미술, 무용, 음악 등의 전통문화가 어우러진 판이다. 굿을 이루는 여러 요소 중 음악은 가장 핵심적인 것이다. 이는 무당의 음악에 의해서 신(神)이 굿판에 강림하고, 굿판에서 놀려지고, 굿판을 떠나기 때문이다. 음악이 없이는 신은 굿판에 존재할 수 없는 것이다. 음악과 종교는 뗄 수 없는 관계를 갖는다. 이 논문은 한국 샤머니즘에서의 음악과 종교성의 관계를 살펴보는 것을 그 목적으로 한다. 한국의 굿 음악은 그 기능과 용도에 따라서, 또한 지역에 따라서-실제로는 무당의 성격-엄격한 형식미 혹은 창조적 예술미와 같은 다른 특징을 보여준다. 이 글에서 밝히고자 하는 것은 의식이 신성(神聖)할수록 음악은 단순해진다는 점이다. 이 글은 강신무와 세습무가 공존하고, 이에 따라 다양한 음악이 행해지는 경기도 지역의 굿 음악을 연구대상으로 한다.
