National Music and National Drama: The Musical Eclecticism of Ch' anggûk

Abstract

Alone p'ansori singer, delivering a sorrowful passage in front of a folding screen, is interrupted by loud blasts on the straight trumpet (nabal) and conch shell (nagak) from the back of the auditorium. A colorful parade files down the aisle playing the raucous royal processional music Taech'wit'a. On reaching the stage, the music changes to the banquet version of the same rhythmic material, Ch'wit'a, and the procession enters an elaborate set representing the yamen of the Governor of Namwŏn. The new Governor, Pyŏn Hakto, takes the seat of honor, his white-robed officials stand in attendance, and a group of female entertainers (kisaeng) lines up to solicit his favors. Such a mixture of theatrical presentation, p'ansori singing, and other varieties of Korean music, is to be seen only in the opera form ch'angguk. This was a scene from a ch'angguk production of The Story of Ch'unhyang in the main hall of the National Center for Korean Traditional Performing Arts in Seoul, performed by a visiting troupe from the National Center for Korean Folk Performing Arts in Namwon, on May 29, 2000.

병풍 앞에 서서 슬픈 한 대목을 부르던 판소리 가수의 소리는 청중석 뒤쪽에서 나는 나발과 나각 소리로 인해 잠시 중단되었다. 화려한 행렬대가 궁중의 행악인 대취타를 큰 소리로 연주하며 청중석 통로를 걸어 내려 왔다. 무대에 이르자 음악은 대취타와 같은 리듬 요소의 연회 음악인 취타로 바뀌었고, 행렬대는 남원관아(yamen)를 정교하게 재현한 세트로 들어갔다. 신관 사또인 변학도는 권좌에 앉아 있으며 정복을 한 수행원들이 참석해 있고 기생 무리들이 그의 은덕을 칭송하기 위해 줄지어 서 있다. 이러한 판소리와 다양한 다른 한국 음악들의 극적 혼합 공연은 창극이라는 가극 형식에서만 볼 수 있다. 예로 든 장면은 2000년 5월 29일 서울 국립국악원 예악당에서 남원 국립민속국악원 연주단이 공연한 창극 춘향전 중의 일부였다.
