Abstract
From 1908 to 1945, female musicians labored under the social status of kisaeng, while having their rights legally limited. Although though the social status of some kisaengs was improved around the year 1930, the legal limitations on their rights still were in place. Such legal policy was only removed before and after the Korean liberation from Japanese colonial rule. However, the abolition of kisaeng system was rather sudden, and it forced those female musicians to face some confusion. Because kisaeng system legally continued over 30 years, and many Korean musicians, as Korea underwent the liberation and wars, longed to restructure the established music world of pre-liberation period. Thus, even though the female musicians were free from the kisaeng system, they had no choice but to experience hardships.
