중국 나희(儺戱)의 현지연구* -귀주성(貴州省) 도진현(道眞縣)의 나희를 중심으로-

Abstract

중국의 나희(儺戱)는 재앙을 쫓고 복을 비는 무교적(巫敎的) 제의에 연희적 놀이가 결합된 형태의 민간신앙의례이다. 나희는 나단(儺團), 나반(儺班) 또는 단반(壇班)이라고 하는 전문연희패에 의해 조직되고 진행된다. 나희의 연행자를 법사(法師)라 하고, 그 우두머리를 장단사(掌壇師)라고 한다. 주로 법사나 나희를 청한 사람의 집에 당을 세우고 하기 때문에 나희를 나당희(儺堂戱)라고도 한다. 나희는 그 명칭에서 알 수 있듯이 구나축역(驅儺逐疫), 즉 액운과 병을 물리기 위해 하는 것인데, 연희적 요소가 다분하다. 즉, 법사들의 노래와 음악, 춤, 그리고 연극이 어우러진 종합예술공연 형태의 종교의례가 나희인 것이다. 법사들은 노래를 부르며 신을 청하고 노래와 춤으로 신을 놀린다. 노래와 춤은 악기반주가 따르기 마련이다. 이렇게 나희는 민간신앙의례이면서도 악가무극(樂歌舞劇)이 함께 하는 총체적인 공연예술이라는 점에서 우리의 굿과 같은 성격을 갖는 것이다. 더구나 우리나라에서도 예전에는 궁중을 중심으로 행하던 무교적 의식을 나례(儺禮)라고 불렀듯이 중국의 나희는 우리의 굿과 같은 성격의 의례이며 많은 닮은 점을 갖고 있다.

Chinese nuoxi is the traditional folk religious ritual resided by the shaman. It is, at the same time, the performing arts in which the shaman sings, dances, and performs special theatrical acts. In this sense, it is similar to the Korean shaman ritual, called gut. In this paper, I present the artistic characteristics of Chinese nuoxi which I observed in Kwizhou, China, last year. Unlike the Korean shaman who is the professional priest and artist - that means s/he makes living by the shaman vocation, the Chinese shaman is a half-shaman whose main vocation is usually the farmer. The Chinese shaman resides the ritual only when the clients demand it (the occasion is scanty). However, the Chinese shaman wears the special costume and masks in order to usher the deities during the ritual. In this sense, the Chinese shaman is the religious priest who evokes the deity and prays for the welfare of the human being.
