How Music Education in Taiwan Moved Away from Traditional Taiwanese Folk Music in the Japanese Colonial Period (1895-1945): An Analysis Based on Shoka Texts

Abstract

In 1895, Taiwan became a colony of Japan in accordance with the Peace Treaty concluded upon the Qing Dynasty's defeat in the Sino-Japanese War. Japanese colonial rule of Taiwan lasted for fifty years until 1945. Since Taiwan was Japan's first colony, there was some confusion regarding the stance under which Taiwan should be ruled (Komagome 1996: 32-38). However, the importance of introducing Japan-led education was recognized from the beginning. This thrust owes much to Isawa Shuji (伊澤修二, 1851-1917 ), the first head of the School Affairs Section of the Government General in Taiwan(Taiwan Sotokufu Gakumu Bucho).

1895년 대만은 청․일 전쟁에서 청왕조의 패배로 평화조약을 체결함에 따라 일본의 식민지가 되었다. 일제 식민지는 1945년까지 50년 동안 계속되었다. 대만이 일본의 첫 번째 식민지가 되었기 때문에 대만을 어떻게 통치할 것인지에 대해서 약간의 혼란이 있었다(Komagome 1996: 32-38). 그러나 일본 주도의 교육을 도입한 것의 중요성은 처음부터 인식되었다. 이러한 추진은 대만 총독부 학교 업무부서의 첫 번째 책임자인 Isawa Shuji(伊澤修二, 1851-1917)에 의해 많은 부분 이루어졌다.
