남과 북의 악기 개량

Abstract

서양음악의 유입과 함께 전통악기가 서양식 극장에서 연주되고 전통음악을 기초로 한 창작음악에 서양 음악적 요소가 수용되면서 국악기가 변화되기 시작했다. 예를 들면, 이왕직 아악부에서 아쟁의 줄을 하나 혹은 둘을 더했고, 최승희 무용반주단의 박성옥이 산조아쟁을 만들고, 김영철은 서양 기타와 거문고의 원리에 기초해서 철현금이라는 악기를 고안했다. 그러다가 1950년 전쟁으로 한반도가 분단되면서 남북의 예술과 악기는 변화된 사회체제 속에서 서로 다른 길을 걷게 되었다. 전통 음악을 보존하고 계승하는데 주력한 남한의 국악계에서는 개인 연주자, 제작자, 작곡가 뿐 아니라 국립국악원 등의 기관이 국악기 개량 연구가 간헐적으로 추진했다. 이후 전통음악의 보존과 함께 점차 창작음악 활동이 활발해지면서 1980년대 중반부터 개량악기가 좀더 부각되었다. 개량에 대한 계속적인 논의 속에서, 개량이라는 용어 자체에 대한 문제가 제기되기도 했지만 개량이라는 용어는 지금까지 일반적으로 통용되고 있으며, 현재 일부 개량악기가 전통악기와 함께 창작음악 연주에 사용되고 있다.

The modification of musical instruments has been carried out differently in the South and North Korea. In this paper, I compared the two cases from four perspectives: firstly, the body (subject) of modification of musical instruments; secondly, scientific research on the instruments; thirdly, problem of Westernization and fourthly, views on music and on the modification of musical instruments. First, in the South, it can be said that the modification was started mainly in the 1960s, while in the North it had already begun early in the 1950s. In the South, the individuals and institutions intermittently made modifications, while in the North the communist party promoted it enmasse, especially in the 1960s and 1970s. The South Korean government focused on the preservation of its traditional music, and its modified instruments have been used mainly for contemporary music, while in the North the modified instruments replaced the traditional ones on the performing stage.
