서양음악 수입 이후 한국에 흐르는 순수주의와 명분론

Abstract

When a foreign idea is introduced to Korea, it tends to strengthen purism and justification after going through intense disputes. Neo-Confucianism and Catholicism are such examples. This is observed in the music world too. Western music, encountered by Koreans during the modernizing era in the late and early 20th century, was affected by the purism resulting from the dominance of Western music in Korean society. Western music domaination in Korea yielded many world-class stars opening an important classical music world. Conversely, the prevalence of Western music in Korea induced the justification of valuing Korean traditional music, which contributed in adding more significance to Korean classical music. The 21st century Korean music world is facing an important phase in which it has to overcome purism and justification, in order to create a new music through co-operation and communication.

외래 사상이 한국에 들어오면 그 사상은 더욱 강화되어 많은 논쟁을 거치는 동안 순수주의와 명분론이 강해지는 경향이 있다. 그 예는 주자학과 기독교를 들 수 있다. 음악계에도 비슷한 경향을 볼 수 있어서 근세에 한국에 들어온 서양음악은 순수주의에 물들어 서양음악 지상주의를 낳았다. 이제 한국의 서양음악계는 많은 세계적 스타를 출현시켰고 또한 세계의 중요한 클래식 시작이 되었다. 한편 서양음악이 한국에 득세하면서 국악을 지켜야 한다는 명분론이 나타나고, 이 명분론은 국악의 확장에 많은 기여를 하였다. 앞으로 다가올 21세기의 한국음악계는 순수주의와 명분주의를 넘어 융합과 소통을 통하여 새로운 음악을 창출해야 한다는 명제를 안고 있다.
