서양음악 수용의 한 축으로서의 교회음악

Abstract

This article investigates the early reception process of modern Western music based on church music. This article examines the experiment process for enculturation and creation through the acquisition process and imitation of the Western music among various phenomena that appeared in the reception process of Western music. The writer attempts to investigate the reception process of Western music aimed at the public rather than historical and theoretical meanings, and based on the fields that practical music was received. The writer considers the axes of the process that modern Western music was received to the public as three axes of church music, popular music, and music education in schools. Looking at the characteristics of three axes, in terms of targets, music education in schools is an axis spreading Western music aimed at young students, and popular music (called popular Chang-Ga, and popular songs at that time) is an axis spreading Western music aimed at adults, particularly early and middle-aged.

본 글은 근대 서양음악의 초기 수용과정에서 나타난 여러 현상 중 교회음악을 중심으로 서양음악의 습득과정과 모방을 거쳐 토착화와 창조를 위한 시도과정을 살핀 글이다. 필자는 본 글을 연구함에 있어 예컨대 이규경(李圭景, 1788~ ?)의 『오주연문장전산고』(五洲衍文長箋散稿, 1834~1839)에 서양음악이론이 소개되었다는 등의 역사적·이론적 의미보다는 일반 대중을 대상으로 서양음악이 수용된 현장에서 나타난 현상을 연구대상으로 설정하였다. 필자는 근대 서양음악이 일반 대중에게 수용된 과정의 축을 교회음악·대중음악·학교음악교육의 3대 축으로 본다. 3대 축의 성격을 살펴보면, 먼저 대상 측면에서 학교음악교육은 어린 학생을 대상으로 서양음악을 전파한 축이고, 대중음악(당시에는 유행창가와 유행가라고 불렀다)는 성인 특히 초년과 중년을 대상으로 전파한 축이다.
