This study aims to explain that the multiple characteristics of deixis are due to the relations of the interaction between the two typical attributes (indexical and symbolic) of a sign. Deixis has indexical characteristics in that it keeps ontological relations with referents, and it also has symbolic characteristics in that it has invariant semantic elements. According to the functions and roles of the deictic expressions in various kinds of registers, we can see very different aspects of these two characteristics. Unlike our expectations, non-standard communications are very widely used. And in non-standard communications, relations between the deictic expressions and their referents show more symbolic characteristics compared with those in standard communications. Relations between deictic expressions and referents in the standard communications are metaphorically, and cognitively projected to the non-standard communications, and symbolic characteristics of the deictic expressions become more salient. This is similarly applied to the other types of the registers. In the narratives, unlike in the conversations, the symbolic characteristics of the deictic expressions, especially in the case of 'here' arid 'now', are more activated and make themselves function as a discourse deixis rather than as an anaphora.-
