Abstract
he United States, the leader of the contemporary world order, will lead once more the new world order in the 21st century. In this situation, the American military, which played a leading role in maintaining the world order in the 20th century, is now trying to transform itself for the 21st century. This analysis tries to forecast the future transformation of U.S. military forces from the historical perspective. After the American-Spanish war in 1898, the United States became one of the leading powers in the Europe dominant international order. As a military basis for the rise of great power, the United States developed rapidly its naval power. The U.S. navy reached the level of the British navy, the globally leading power, in the 1920s. After the second world war, the United States began to lead the world order. As a new basis for the world military order, the United States developed nuclear power. During the cold war period, the United States maintained its nuclear dominance. After the end of the cold war with the collapse of the Soviet Union, the United States began to give emphasis on the information power. Thus, the U.S. military is trying to develop complex military forces which can fight simultaneously the modem war, nuclear war, and information war. In particular, along with the revolution of information technology, the U.S. forces will primarily focus on the improvement of its information power.
