From the open door' to Western countries in the late of 19th Century, broke against the East-Asian region the waves of the modern globalization i.e. globalizing the modem Western capitalism and international order. The modem Western capitalism and international order had contradictions: it represented industrialization, sovereignty or national equality on one hand, but on the other hand, it served as the justification for organized exploitation, violence and tyranny.

lt has been commonly accepted that Japan had been incorporated into the modern Western international order by the US-Japan Treaty of Amity and Commerce in 1854. But such a commonly accepted idea can fail to see the facts: Japan had maintained the traditional international order until the open door, and after the open door, Japan adapted to the globalization. This adaptation implies opportunism (in other words, taking advantage of globalization) and resistance. Japan adapted to globalizing as well as reorganizing the Western international order which was actually led by the British Empire (Pax Britanica). On this process of adaptation, of course, various factors in internal and external worked. Among them, this article will focus on the argument for Asian solidarity of Japanese intellectuals and politicians, which was forming and changing in the ideological stream of Asianism in Meiji era (1868-1912). It can be said that the way of Japans adaptation was basically opportunism. But the opportunism, to some extent, contained or hid resistance. In this sense, Japans adaptation was the resisting opportunism or opportunist resistance. This expression is a kind of oxymoron. holding contradictions of the modern Western capitalism and international order in common. We can find a typical example of resisting opportunism' in the argument for Asian solidarity. This article examines its historical process in Meiji era by questions as below: How did it form in the Meiji 10th era? But why was it drifting along and how did it change in appearance until the Sino-Japanese War? Thereafter what kind of argument for Asian solidarity revived and meta-morphosed itself into disappearance? Lastly, 1 will think about the legacy or the lesson remained of its drift and disappearance.
