Alasdair MacIntyre의 행위전통 개념과 그것의 교육학적 활용에 대한 재검토

Abstract

본 연구는 지난 10여 년간 우리 교육학계에서 특히 Alasdair MacIntyre의 윤리학적 관점 위에서 진행되어온 이른바 사회적 실제 논의를 그것의 개념적 원류에 해당하는 아리스토텔레스의 윤리학 논의에 비추어 재검토하는 데에 그 목적이 있다. 사회적 인간활동 혹은 사회적 실제로 번역되어 전통적인 주지주의적 자유교육을 극복하기 위한 대안적 개념으로 제시되어 온 행위전통(practice)의 개념적 성격과 그것에 관한 MacIntyre의 논의, 그리고 그것과 관련된 교육학적 논의는 그의 이론을 포함한 현대 덕윤리학의 논의들이 그 출발점으로 삼고 있는 아리스토텔레스 윤리학과 연관지어 논의될 때 그 포괄적인 의미를 제대로 유지할 수 있다. 논문의 초두에서 아리스토텔레스가 그의 ｢니코마코스 윤리학｣에서 제시한 인간 삶의 궁극적 목적과 그것을 추구하는 좋은 삶의 의미를 논의하고, 이후 이것들을 토대로 한 MacIntyre의 덕론과 그 문맥 내에서 행위전통의 개념이 분석된다. 논문의 말미에서 연구자는 적어도 MacIntyre의 관점이 지닌 아리스토텔레스 윤리학과의 일관성을 유지되도록 하려면, 그의 practice 개념은 실천적 활동과 이론적 활동 모두를 포괄하는 개념으로 이해되어야 한다는 점을 주장한다.

The purpose of this study is to critically review the educational-philosophical discussions in Korea during the last decade concerning the conception of 'practice' appeared in Alasdair MacIntyre's After Virtue. It will be argued that the ideas in the concept of MacIntyre's 'practice' and its significance for education should be analysed in the larger context of Aristotle's ethical theory found especially in Nichomachean Ethics and, therefore, it should be seen more comprehensively as meaning both theoretical and practical activities. For this reason, attempts to interpret it as an idea that denies the importance of theoretical activities in men's life would result in an misunderstanding of the concept. If the ideas of 'good life' is something to pursue in our educational activities it should be something that includes not just part but all of men's life.
