중학교 교사의 실천지능에 대한 인구통계학적 분석

Abstract

논문 요약성공적인 교사의 능력이나 특성을 밝히려는 연구들은 다양한 관점에서 수행되어 왔다. 이와 관련한 많은 연구들은 교사의 가르치는 능력, 또는 인성이나 도덕성의 관점에서 성공적인 교사를 설명하고자 하였다. 한편, 시대의 변화와 함께 교사들은 다양한 업무와 복잡한 인간관계 속에서 새로운 문제에 직면하거나 갈등을 겪게 되는 일이 많아졌다. 이러한 상황을 적절하면서도 효과적으로 해결할 수 있는 능력은 성공적인 교사를 설명하는 새로운 관점이라 할 수 있으며, 이는 최근의 지능이론에서 활발하게 논의되고 있는 실천지능과 관련이 있다. 교사의 실천지능과 관련된 구체적인 논의를 위해, 중학교 교사들의 실천지능을 측정할 수 있는 중학교 교사용 실천지능검사인 PIT-MST를 사용하여, 교사의 경력이나 학력, 성, 담당 교과목 등과 같은 인구통계학적 변인별로 실천지능에 어떠한 차이가 있는지를 경험적으로 검증하고자 하였다. 연구 결과 중학교 교사의 실천지능은 경력에 따른 집단에서만 통계적으로 유의한 차이가 있었다(p<.01). 그러나 다른 변인들에서는 통계적으로 유의한 차이가 없었다. 이 연구는 중학교 교사들을 대상으로 하였으므로 검사 결과를 교사 전체 집단에 일반화하기에는 제한점이 있으나, 중학교 교사의 실천지능에 대해 인구통계학적인 분석을 시도함으로써 성공적인 교사를 설명하는 새로운 관점을 경험적으로 탐색하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다.

The main purpose of this study is to see if there are any differences in teachers' practical intelligence (PI) based upon their demographic variables such as teaching experiences, academic degrees, gender, and subject-matters. For this study, PI for teachers is conceptualized as the ability to cope with problem or conflict situations that rise from performing their jobs as teachers. The Practical Intelligence Test for Middle School Teachers (PIT-MST) was used in order to measure PI for teachers. The subjects of this study were 278 middle school teachers in Korea. It was found that there is statistically significant difference in teachers' PI based upon their level of teaching experiences(p<.01), but no statistically significant differences based upon other demographic variables. Even though this study had some limitations (for example, the subjects consisted of only middle school teachers in Korea), the results will help for us to understand teachers' PI and to give some implications for the improvement of teachers' expertise.
