John Dewey의 자본주의 비판과 Marxism

Abstract

연구자는 본 논문을 통해 크게 세 가지 작업을 시도해 보았다. 우선, 점진적 개선주의(meliorism)를 신봉했던 Dewey가 경제대공황을 전후하여 급진주의적 경향을 띠게 되었던 배경을 조명하였다. 다음으로, 자본주의에 대한 Dewey의 인식과 비판을 자본주의의 특징과 사회전체에 대한 영향이라는 2가지 측면에서 논의하였다. 끝으로, Dewey의 견해나 Marxism 모두가 자본주의를 부정적으로 인식한다는 공통점에도 불구하고, Dewey가 Marxism을 거부하는 이유를 Marxism에 대한 Dewey의 비판적 분석을 토대로 고찰하였고, 이를통해 자본주의에 내재된 문제를 해결하는 방법에 관한 양자 간의 시각차를 부각시켜 보았다. 그리고 이러한 시각차를 통해 학교에 의한 점진적 사회개선에 대한 Dewey의 신념을 확인해 보았다.

In this paper, I have attempted to do three things: First, I have illuminated how and why John Dewey accepted socialistic measures of radical nature to cure the social ills caused by capitalism around the Great Depression despite that he was known to be a lifetime meliorist. Second, I have analyzed Dewey's view of capitalism in two ways: First, I have focused upon his critique of capitalism as the economic system. Second, I have concentrated on how Dewey

conceived the impacts of capitalism upon society as a whole, i.e. its anti-democratic features affecting all the aspects of human action. Finally, I have elucidated how Dewey rejected Marxism. In doing this, I have demonstrated

the incompatibility of Dewey's critical view of capitalism and Marxism in spite of the superficial similarities between the two. Additionally, I have reconfirmed Dewey's faith in gradual social reform via schools on the basis of his rejection of Marxism.
