Abstract

This study investigated the effect of ability grouping on the 9rd grade Mathematics and English achievement using hierarchical linear modeling. The results of Korean Education Longitudinal Study in 2007 were used. In total 142 schools and 5,898 students were analyzed. The students' Mathematics and English test scores were dependent variable, and whether to implement ability grouping was indpendent variable in school level. And gender, academic self concept, students' studying hours, parents support were selected as independent variables based on the previous studies. The results indicated that the ability grouping had no absolute effect on Mathematics and English achievement. However, the ability grouping affected the Maths achievement of male students. The male students who were implemented ability grouping showed higher test scores than not implemented ability grouping. This result proposed that the effect of ability grouping depends on the type of subject and gender. This study also proposed that how the ability grouping operates might diversify the effect of ability grouping on achievement.
