Abstract

This study analyzed the impact of ICT on students' reading, math, and science performance based on PISA 2009 Korean data. The multi-level analysis was used to control the students' demographic variables, subject related variables and school characteristic variables. The results shows that while the affective traits such as confidence in high-level tasks and attitude toward using computer have a positive relationship between academic performance, the access to computer in school and home don't have an statistically significant effect and the use of computer in school and for learning have a negative relationship between academic performance. According to analyzing the impact of various use of computer, when they use computer more frequently for one to one game, online chatting, downloading for music, films, and softwares, students achieve lower scores in academic performance. However, when students use computer more frequently for homework and searching internet for fun, they achieve higher scores in academic performance. Also the impact of the confidence in editing graphic images, creating databases, and using spreadsheets on academic performance is different according to the subject. For the effect of reading online materials, while reading online materials for news, dictionary, and searching for practical information is affirmative, using computer for interacting with other people such as online group discussion and participating in forum have a negative connection with reading performance.
