Abstract

The aims of the paper are to analyze the economic structure of korean cities by the of basic non basic employment structure. It is well known that cities cannot exist exclusively by taking in their own washing. They export and import commodities and services and also provide some of their own commodities and services internally. Therefore, some finite percentage of all persons employed in any city is needed to serve the city, while the remainder supports the existence of the city by serving a region greater than the city itself. Location quotients have sometimes been used. The 'K' values suggested by Gunnar Alexandersson make probably more useful benchmarks. Alexandersson used the 1950 Census of Population to obtain the occupations of employed persons, by industry groupings, for each city with a population of 10,000 or more. For each city he calculated the percentage of employed persons working in each industry. Then, for each industry, the cities were arrayed by these percentages and the fifth percentile from the bottom was designated as the "K" value for that industry.
