The purpose of this paper is to analyze the centrality and central place hierarchy of Korean cities. Attention is given not only to the relations between accordings th the wholesale commodity types, are complied for each city by the Wholesale and Retail Trade Census (Economic Planning Board, 1969). With these data, an objective measure devised by W.K.D. Davies (1967) is used to assign functional index values to the cities. The location coefficient is calculated for one outlet of fifty functional types using the formual: By multiplying the number of outlets of every different type of function of each given center by the relevant location cofficient, centrality values (the degree of centrality) are derived to findout all the functional characteristics of each center. Functional index values are the sum of all the centrality values scored for each center. The functional index values derived are shown in Table 1 and plotted in Fig-ure 2. conclusions of this paper are as follows; 1 Functional Index Method can be a useful tech-nique for measuring the rank of centrality attained by the total numbers of each type of establish-ment reveals that centrality varies according to the size of center.-
