- Abstract
- Ramie as a fibrecrop is not so widely cultivated as cotton or hemp in Korea, however, its important as a cash crop is next to ginseng and tobacco. Horizontal distribution of Ramie: In general ramie is cultivated in regions where annual mean temperature is above 10.5 ℃~12℃ and January temperatures do not fall below – 10℃ ~-8℃. This isotherm coincide with the limit of ramie cultivation regions present, are found below in the areas southward of this isotherm. Nothern limit of cultivation is 37〬 N in latitude, while below 35〬〬〬v30'N ramie agricultural regions cannot be found, largely for heavy rainfall. Vertical limit of ramie cultivation along 37〬 N is up to 500m above sea level in theory, but mail cultivation regions are located mostly below 100 m above sea level. In other words, agricultural regions of ramie are the south-western plain of Korea, whee average altitude of the land are around or under 100m above sea level. Elements of Ramie cultivation limit: 1) Temperature: Not only temperature is the most influential elements but also horizontal limit of ramie cultivation depend upon it.
