Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the patterns of residential differentiation of urban population in Seoul and Pusan in 1960 and to analyze them comparatively. 2) The data for this study is based on the 1960 Population and Housing Census of Korea. The study area is confined within the legal city boundary of Seoul and Pusan. Thus it covers 251 administrative Dongs in Seoul and 112 administrative Dongs in Pusan as are figured in Figures 1,2 in the appendix, factor analysis (Principalaxis factor analysis and Varimax rotation with factors whose eigenvalues are larger than 1. 0) is done seperately for both cities and the respective factors are mapped to see the spatial patterns. To compare the factor sutrctures of both cities the coefficients of congruence are calculated. 3) The results of this study are as follows: Each seven factors were extracted in Seoul and Pusan as are shown in Tables 1, 2. Each factor describes the different aspects of the current residential differentiation of respective cities and it can be interpreted in the light of the historical, social process and morphology of each cities. The spatial distributions of respective factors of both cities are figured in Figure 1.1-2.7. (1) In Seoul, Factor 1 which is labelled as Social Status is found to be the leading factor which describes the greater part of the residential differentiation of Seoul.
