dc.description.abstract | It should be said that primitive study of the lanform in Korea started already in the 15th century, but the scientific gemorphology in Korea may be said to have begun since early 20th century.
At the beginning of the 20th century the Davisian theory was introduced to Korea mainly by the Japanese geographers. Even if the theorise of A. Penck and W. Penck were also introduced, the Davisian theory influenced the geomorphologists so strongly that this still affects the geomorphological studies in Korea. Generally speaking, most studies of geomorphology before the 2nd World War conducted in this country were the description of the landforms by deductive methods. Especially the sequence of the formation of the topographical surface (erosion surface) was studied with a good result but with little attention to the geological age of them. The peneplain, characters of the coasts such as submergence of western coast and emergence of eastern coast and the volcanic landforms of the Cheju Island became well known among the geomorphologists. | - |
