Abstract
Suburbs are much discussed but poorly defined. However, suburbs are in many ways considered to be a residual category in the literature published in western society. In the voluminous literature on suburbs there are two general approaches to the problems of definition. The first relies on objective, relatively easily measurable characteristics, suck as demographic characteristics of the population or the type of land use. The second emphasizes the human consequences and lifestyle of suburbanties socioeconomic activity. The two approaches are not mutually

exclusive, but incooperative each other. 14 topical specializations related to residential suburbanization in the urban fringe have been identified in the literature review. They are behavioral aspect, development and growth, employment, housing, historical, aspect information systems, land ownerships, land use, land use policy and planning, policy and evaluation, political aspect, population, public servicing, and social aspect topics. They can be classified into two groups of analysis. One is the land use transfer ,analysis, and the other is the socioeconomic change analysis.
