Abstract
This is a study of rural settlement forest with emphasis on the cultural-ecological process and the meaning in the rural landscape. The settlement forest was planned to serve as windbreaks and to provide a mor desirable local climate. Especially in Yi Dynasty period, the settlment forest was to complement the spatial structure of village in view of Poong-soo(風水). According to principle of Poong-soo, the opening of outlet of river in a village must be complemented by planting trees and so forth. This multipurpose forest in traditional

villages is called 'SOO(쑤), or 'Dong-soo (洞數)'. 'Soo' is located on the west riverside in Andong area. Because winter monsoon blows eastward and the Nak-dong river flows to west. Presently most of 'Soo' were displaced by riverbank or farmland, but typical 'Dong-soo's have kept their original form at 'sadaebu' (士大夫 :

priviliged class in Yi Dynasty period) clan villages in Andong area. I think that the preservation of 'Dong-sao' is associated with ancestoral worship of the clan village.
