- Abstract
- The purpose of this study is to identify locational patterns and characteristics of foreign-invested manufacturing firms in Korea and to supply primary research material for further study on the impact of foreign-invested firms on the domestic regional economy. A foreign-invested firm in this study is defined as a firm in which the foreign equity is greater than or equal to ten percent. This study deals with the manufacturing firms which have production facilities. The data used are derived from
'Foreign Direct Investment in Korea (1983, unpublished data)' 'Directories of Korean Business (1984) " and 'Company Directories (1984)'. Exploratory frameworks for accounting for the location of foreigninvested firms in Korea are derived from the foreign direct investment theories developed in other academic fields and from the literatures of geographic studies. The hypotheses in the
frameworks are as follows: 1) The location of foreign-invested firms is reiated with that of domestic manufacturing agglomerations, especially with the location of domestic large corporations. This hypothesis is based on the 'followthe-leader' behaviour concept inferred from the oligopolistic competition theory.
