Abstract
This study examines the labor market participation aspects of the spread effects of Ulsan on her hinterland, Ulju County. Ulsan, having more than a half million population as of 1987, is one of the major industrial centers of Korea.

Particular attentions of the study are placed upon the spatial extent of extended commuting from Ulju County to the industrial center and the commuter characteristics. A commuter survey was conducted in 1987 to identify demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of the commuters. Census data were also examined to clarify trends in population and non-farm household changes since 1960. Major findings of the study and their implications are elaborated below. There are about five thousand workers who commute daily from Ulju County to the City of Ulsan, a very low magnitude of participation to the Ulsan labor market of about 165,000 jobs. The spatial extent of the commuting field too is extremely limited in that the majority of the commuters are within the range of tenkilometer road-distance from the Ulsan city limit. There exists virtually no commuter beyond 22 kilometers distant from the city limit.
