The Choson dynasty (A.D 1392-1910) of Korea designated much portion of Hanyang, the capital city which is nowadays called Seoul, to the Keumsan, i.e., 'forbidden mountains and hills' where any type of land utilization was strictly prohibitted. Studies have interpreted the Keumsan somewhat equivalent to the 'green belts' of the Western cities. The present study re-examines the functions of Keumsan and attempts to delineates the exact sphere of the forbidden lands. The old documents examined for the study are the Choson-wangjo-shillok (朝鮮王朝實錄, daily records of Choson dynasty's affairs), the Kyeongkuk-daejon(經國大典, the constitution of Choson dynasty), geographical records of Hanyang, and old maps as well. The major findings of the study are as follows:

The Keumsan of Hanyang was bounded on the north by Mt.Tobong and Mt.Pukhan, the south by Eetaewon, Hannamdong and Keumhodong, the west by Ahnsan and Cheongpadong, and the easst by Jongamdong and Jeongneong. However, not all of the areas within this noundary were designated to the forbidden lands. The Keumsan contained both mountain ridges and sides in the inside the Hanyang castle, but mountain ridges only in the out of the castle. The limits of the Keumsan indicate the extent of the built up areas of Hanyang in the early Chosom. The population increase in the capital city resulted in enlarging the Keumsan in the later centuries of the dynasty.
