Abstract
Residential segregation can be seen as the spatial manifestation of uneven distribution of such important scarce resources as housing and residential environment. This paper aims to clarify the factors of residential segregation of classes in both the housing supply side and the demand side. For the preliminary research, four social classes of upper, new-middle, traditional-middle, and lower class had been categorized by the occupation, job status, and average income of the residents. The major findings are summed up into the followings.

There has been a significant growth of the new-middle class in 1970's and 1980's as the result of rapid technical and organizational division proceeded from the industrial evolution. Also the residential structure has been under conspicuous changes during the period. In 1970's, in the area of large-scale housing development, the percentage of upper and new middle class residents has risen notably, thus increasing the level of segregation indices of each class and between classes throughout Seoul. The trend of 1970's continued in 1980's as the proportion of new-middle and upper class residents increased around the already established housing development area, and also in other newly developed areas.
