Interfirm Linkage of the Telecommunication Equipment Industry in the Seoul Metropolitan Area - A Network Approach

- The purpose of this study is investigation the material and information linkage among the actors in the telecommunication equipment industry which is characterized by the overwhelming spatial concentration in the Seoul metropolitan ares (SMA) and intensive R&D investment, employing the network approach. The network approach is selected because it allows us to understand the micro-linkage within the broader context, that is, network. I discerned four forms of the subnetworks by considering the market and key firms characteristics. Through the subnetwork analysis, it is identified that there are remarkable differences in the roles of the linkages within the network by type of subnetwork, even though the linkages is analogues on another superficially. In the dependent subnetwork , for example, producing the cellular phone, foreign linkages lower the importance of domestic linkage, which may lead to the fragmentation of the network. On the contrary in the independent subnetwork which, for example, produce the electronic exchange, those linkages provide the firms with market and technology information, reinforce the intensive information exchange between network actors, and heighten the degree of network integration. Here, government and KT(Korea Telecom,) play a critical role as the key actors, managing and controlling the market actors under a coherent direction. Secondly, subnetwork may be transformed into another type of subnetwork through interaction between various actors concerned. It also influences the development of entire network.
