Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the differentiation of farm management and adaptation that results from the change of a structure of agricultural labor-force and the development of agricultural mechanization in 1980s. The study area is Ch'ondog-Ri, Nungju-Myeon, Hwasun-gun. The results from the questionnaire survey are primarily used for the analysis. The result of the study is as follows. First, A dramatic depopulation mostly of the young and men results in weakness of agricultural labor-force. Adaptation styles for the shortage of agricultural labor-force make different appearances in accordance with farm management. Namely, Paddy rice farming accelerates agricultural mechanization, but commercial farming strengthens a family labor-force, in particular, women's labor-force. In addition, Pumasi and co-operation working will fade away soon. Second, The major factor for differentiation of farm management in study area is the agricultural mechanization, which is introduced not because it makes a profit but because it substitutes for needing of labor-force. Being mostly young and not always rich, they don't secure the optimal size of cultivated area needed for the for the use of the maximal capacity of the agricultural machine. So they seek to rent land or be entrusted with farm work. On the other sides, Entrusting farmers show different aspects according to demographic and economic characteristic. While a young farmer that cultivates small land selects a part-time farming, A old household carries on intensive farming such as vegetables and green house in strengthening household labor-force.
