羅末麗初의 정치변동과 정치사상: 禪宗을 중심으로

Abstract

This paper focuses on the relation between the political change and the political thoughts, especially concerning the introduction and prebalence of Zen Buddhism during the late Silla and early Koryo Dynasty. Moreover, it asserts that there was a strong affinity between the local elites, the rising strata of the political change and Zen Buddhism(Sonjong),a critical branch of Buddhism. Above a1l, Zen Buddhism(Sonjong) had criticized the Avatamsaka sect(Hwaom-Jong， 華嚴宗) which played as the political ideology of Silla monarchical Kingship and represented a difficult, pedantic and pastoral Buddhism'. Zen Buddhism arose as an altemative religion and political thoughts. Naturally, it could be connected with a critical force, moreover the local elites, to the Silla Monarchy. The introduction and prevalence of Zen Buddhism could be regarded as a shift of hegemony of Buddhism, in the political thoughts. It could be summarized as From the Avatamsaka sect(Hwaom-Jong) to Zen Buddhism(Sonjong)", a critics and overcoming of Ancient culture, and a vision of Medieval Intelligence". However, Zen Buddhism(Sonjong) could not succeed in the mass mobilization and complete the political change. Because of its basic characteristics, there was a psychological distance to the peasantry and general masses. On the other hand. the Maitreya Buddllsm(彌動信仰)， which could offer the passion of Millenianism Movement and the coming of Messiah,played an important role in mass mobilization and political change.
