대화적 공동체의 정치사상: 찰스 테일러(Charles Taylor)와 마이클 오크샷(Michael Oakeshott)을 중심으로

Abstract

원자화된 개인과, 이들을 토대로 유지되는 대중 사회의 문제는 오늘날에도 지속되고 있다. 현대 자본주의 경제는 개인들 사이의 고립적 상황을 악화시키고 있으며, 도덕적 주관주의를 옹호하는 문화는 모든 규범적 판단을 자기-결정적(self-determinate) 자유의 관점에서 정당화하고 있다. 찰스 테일러와 마이클 오크샷의 논의는 이 같은 현대 대중 사회의 문제에 대한 해법으로서, 대화적 공동체 혹은 시민 사회 개념을 제시하고 있는 것으로 이해될 수 있다. 두 사상가가 상이한 지적 전통에 기대어 논의를 전개하였음에도, 이러한 이유에서 우리는 두 사상가의 논의를 상보적으로 독해함으로써 실천적 함의를 재고해 볼 수 있다. 소극적 자유와 등치될 수 없는 진정성/자기 진실성의 이상을 강조함으로써, 개인으로서의 자아가, 우리가 귀속한 대화 공동체 속에서 성숙하여 가는 것임을 테일러가 보여주고 있다면, 오크샷은 이러한 대화가 아닌, 다른 방식의 지름길을 찾으려는 모든 시도가 무익한 것임을 보여준다. 오크샷은 보수주의적 사상가로서 널리 알려져 있으며, 실제로 그의 논변을 소수에 의해 운위되는 귀족적 시민 사회를 지향하는 것으로 독해할 수 있는 가능성도 적지 않다. 그러나 그의 주장을, 근대 합리주의(Rationalism)' 비판이라는 거시적 문제를 속에서 독해할 경우, 오크샷의 입론은 보수성을 띠는 것이라기보다는 오히려, 대화를 통한 실천 이외의 대중 사회의 문제를 극복할 대안을 찾을 수 없다는 점을 시종일관 강변하는 것으로 읽혀질 수 있다. 요컨대 두 사상가는 대화에 근간한 정치 공동체의 재구성과 복원 이외의 현대 대중사회의 문제에 대한 다른 해법을 찾을 수 없다는 점을 보여준다.

The problems of atomized individuals and the issue of mass society which consists of those individuals are continuously serious in the contemporary society. Modern capitalist economic system intensifies this problematic tendency of seperation among the individuals. The modern culture that supports the moral subjectivism justifies every kind of normative judgments of each individual on the perspective of defending self-determinate freedom. The main theses of Charles Taylor and of Michael Oakeshott maintain that 'conversational' political community or civil association can be the only solution for those problems of mass society in modern times. Even though there are many dissimilarities between the theses of two thinkers, this study asserts they are fundamentally concerned about the same problems of mass society. Charles Taylor argues that the idea of authenticity cannot be identified with that of self-determinate freedom or negative freedom. He stresses that an individual can be a mature citizen only within the community of mutual conversation which is not the same as coercive interference from outside. Additionally, Micheal Oakeshott shows that there is no other way except constant conversational understanding. The thesis of Oakeshott's contains many conservative aspects. His criticism on the modern mass society even seems to defend the conservative idea of the "aristocracy of the few." Although this it is not an appropriate understanding. This study stresses that Oakeshott's solution on the mass society must be reconsidered within the wide context of his critiques on the problems of modern 'Rationalism.'In short, Taylor and Oakeshott teach us that all we can do and should do is active and practical participation in the conversation that intends mutual understanding and rearrangement.
