키케로에 있어서 수사학과 정치

Abstract

키케로의 대표적인 정치철학적 작품인 『국가에 관하여』와 『법률에 관하여』가 그렇듯이， 그의 대표적인 수사학 작품인 『웅변가에 관하여』도 플라톤을 로마인의 관점에서 모방하고 있다. 키케로의 학문적 독창성은 바로 이 로마인의 관점을 견지하려는 데 놓여 있다. 수사학 작품인 『웅변가에 관하여 』는 단순히 수사학의 기술에 관해서만 말하고 있지 않다. 이 기술보다 더욱 중요한 주제로 부각되는 것은 이상적 웅변가가 어떤 사람인가 하는 것이다. 이상적 웅변가는 플라톤이 제시하고 있는 철인왕이나 정치가， 크세노폰이 제시하고 있는 키루스왕에 대비되는 이상적인 통치자의 상이라고 할 수 있다. 이상적 웅변가는 보편적인 지식과 웅변술을 겸비하고， 현실적인 정치의 장인민회 ， 원로원 ， 법정에서 활동하는 정치가이다. 키케로는 수사학을 수단으로 해서 광장(forum)에서 활동하는 정치가가 변증법을 활용해서 혼자서 진리에 도달하는 철학자보다 우월하다고 보고 있다. 키케로는 이러한 관점을 가지고 철학과 수사학의 싸움 을 종결지려 한다. 이 싸움에서 정치학이 부각되며, 수사학을 포함하는 폭넓은 인문교양교육이 정치교육의 프로그램으로 자리 잡게 된다.

Cicero imitates Plato in a Roman perspective not only in his works of political philosophy such as Republic and Laws but also in his rhetorical works of De Oratore and Orator. His scholastic originality lies in his effort to maintain that perspective. The main theme of De Oratore may seem to be the exposition of art of rhetoric, but it turns out that the most important theme is about "who is the ideal orator?" Ciceros ideal orator can be compared with Platos philosopher-king and statesman, and Xenophons King Cyrus. The ideal orator is an ideal statesman who tries to persuade people in comitia, senate, and law courts, having been equipped with universal knowledge and oratory. Cicero thinks that an orator-statesman who acts in the forum by using the art of rhetoric is superior to a philosopher who meditates in his own laboratory with the method of dialectics. He attempts to end the traditional quarrel between philosophy and rhetoric by emphasizing the superiority of rhetoric. Politics newly surfaces in the midst of this quarrel and liberal education(humanitas) assumes the role of political education.
