에피쿠로스신학과 스토아신학에 관한 비판적 검토: 키케로의 『신의 본성에 관하여』를 중심으로

Abstract

『신의 본성에 관하여』는 『예언에 관하여』와 『운명에 관하여』와 더불어 삼부작을 구성한다. 키케로는 신의 본성이란 주제가 상당히 난해하고 불명확하기 때문에 제대로 다루어지지 않았음을 지적하면서, 이 주제는 인간 정신이 파악해야 할 가장 고귀한 학문분야임을 강조하고 있다. 신의 본성에 관한 논의가 중요한 이유는 만약 신에 대한 숭배가 사라진다면 사람들 간의 신뢰와 사회적 유대감 그리고 유별나게 뛰어난 덕목인 정의가 사라지게 될 것이기 때문이다. 키케로는 로마의 청년들이 도덕적 해이에 빠져있는 것을 강하게 비난하며, 그 원인을 전통적 종교가 유대감과 정의의 생성이라는 정치적 역할을 제대로 수행하지 못하고 있다는 데서 찾고 있다. 키케로는 『신의 본성에 관하여』에서 로마 종교의 개혁을 꾀하고 있다. 그는 종교개혁을 통해, 다시 말해 새로운 종교교육을 통해, 당시 로마사회에 만연한 미신을 타파하고 보다 이성적인 정치질서를 수립하고자 했다. 종교교육의 내용은 로마 종교와 스토아신학을 절충한 것이다. 여기서 절충주의자로서의 키케로의 모습이 드러나지만, 그의 절충의 방법은 단순한 모방이 아니라 회의주의적 성찰에 근거하고 있기 때문에 독창적이라고 할 수 있다.

Ciceros theological trilogy is composed of On the Nature of the Gods, On Divination, and On Fate. Saying that the issue of the nature of the gods is particularly difficult and obscure, Cicero claims that the nature of the gods is the noblest of studies for the human mind to grasp. The importance of this noblest study lies in that if reverence for the gods is removed, trust and the social bond between men and the uniquely pre-eminent virtue of justice will disappear. Cicero lamented seriously the moral laxity of the Roman youth, and suggested that the moral problem was due to the failure of Roman religion to perform its political role of producing solidarity and justice among citizens. It is plausible to assert that his intention to write On the Nature of the Gods was to reform the Roman religion. He tried to establish just and rational political order by means of reformation of Roman religion, or new method of religious education. The contents of new religious education was a mixture of Roman traditional religion and the Stoic theology. Here we can find Cicero as a philosopher of eclecticism. However, as his eclectic method is not based on mosaic imitation of religious doctrines but on sceptical reflections, we should admit that his thinking is original to a large extent.
