Abstract

이 글은 윤리학에 대한 비트겐슈타인의 생각을 『논리ㆍ철학 논고』와 「윤리학 강의」를 중심으로 살펴본 것으로서, 그 핵심 논지와 시사점은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 윤리학은 말로 표현될 수 없다. 왜냐하면 가치는 세계에 속하지 않기 때문이다. 이러한 지적은 가치의 근거를 사실에서 찾거나, 윤리적 의지를 과학적ㆍ심리학적 방법으로 설명하려는 시도의 부적절성을 일깨워준다. 둘째, 윤리학은 말로 표현될 수 없는 것(절대적 가치)을 표현하려는 시도로서 이는 한편으로 넌센스이자 언어의 오용이지만, 다른 한편으로는 인간의 어쩔 수 없는 경향의 반영이자 또한 존경할 만한 것이기도 하다. 이러한 지적은 윤리학에서 일상적 언어를 초월한 방법, 즉 은유나 역설을 통한 접근 방법에 주목할 필요가 있음을 시사해준다.셋째, 윤리학은 세계의 한계이자 조건이며, 그런 의미에서 초월적이라 할 수 있다. 또 인간의 윤리적 능력은 언어 능력처럼 인간에게 전제되어 있는 것으로서 지식처럼 가르쳐질 수 있는 것이 아니라 단지 계발되어야 할 어떤 것이다. 이러한 지적은 특히 윤리교육에서 지식 교육보다 도덕적ㆍ미학적 감수성을 길러주는 일이 더 중요함을 시사한다.넷째, 윤리적 의지는 세계의 한계를 바꾸려는 시도로서 그것은 행복한 삶을 통해 스스로 정당화되며, 영원의 관점에서 삶과 세계를 관조하는 경지를 지향한다. 이러한 지적은 늘 세속적 가치에 매몰되어 중심을 잃기 쉬운 우리들에게 영원하고 절대적인 가치를 추구하는 일의 중요성을 일깨워주고, 삶과 세계를 보다 깊고 넓게 바라볼 것과 자기 성찰의 중요성을 일깨워준다.

This essay tries to make clear the ethical thoughts of Wittgenstein through his Tractatus and "Lecture on Ethics." Its main theses and messages are as follows. First, ``ethics is what cannot be said (in ordinary language), for a value does not belong to the world (of facts).`` This argument tells us the inadequacy of justifying value on the basis of facts or explaining ethical will by virtue of scientific or psychological method. Second, ``ethics is to say what cannot be said. Thus it may be nonsense or misuse of language on the one hand, but it could also be a document of tendency in human mind which we cannot help respecting on the other hand.`` This argument implies that in ethics the metaphorical or paradoxical methods are worth noticing. Third, ``ethics is transcendental. The ethical capacity, which is given to human by nature, cannot be taught, but can be practiced only.`` This argument suggests that for ethics education, to cultivate ethical or esthetical sensitivity is more important than to teach knowledge. Fourth, ``ethical will, which is to try to change the limits of the world, can be justified of itself through a happy life, and it aims to contemplate life and the world from eternal perspective.`` This argument lets us realize the importance of the absolute value and of self reflection in this secularized world.
