전후 천황제와 젠더 : 황태자비 마사코의 시련과 황실의 위기를 중심으로

Abstract

이 연구에서는 황태자와 혼인 후 장기간에 걸쳐 적응장애를 앓고 있는 황태자비 마사코의 시련을 창구로 삼아 일본 천황제에 내포된 젠더 문제를 고찰했다. 마사코의 시련을 통해 천황제를 조망하는 것은 천황제도가 고수해 온 강고한 남성중심주의를 드러내 줄 뿐만 아니라 현대 일본사회에서 천황제가 겪고 있는 위기의 한 중요한 원인을 살펴볼 수 있게 해준다. 황태자 나루히토와 마사코의 혼인이 황실의 새로운 시대의 개막이라는 수사 속에 적극적으로 해석되기도 했지만 실제로는 마사코에게 기대되었던 최우선의 역할은 황위 후계자 아들을 낳는 것이었다. 전후 상징천황제가 열린 황실을 표방하며 새로운 모색을 해왔음에도 불구하고 천황제의 핵심에는 시대의 변화를 부정하는 남계 왕조시대의 논리가 자리하고 있기 때문이다. 그런 까닭에 황위 계승의 위기에 직면한 2000년대 초두 여제의 가능성이 적극 타진되었으나 남계 후계자가 확보되자마자 여제 논쟁은 서둘러 봉합되었다. 남계 계승자 확보 문제 외에도 마사코의 시련을 가중시킨 것은 사회 전반의 변화와 무관히 천황가가 고수해 온 가부장적 이에(家)제도와 일종의 극장국가로서의 상징천황제가 내포한 근본적인 취약성, 그리고 이런 속성들을 뒷받침하는 논리로서 만세일계에 대한 믿음 등이 있다. 천황제가 고수하고자 하는 이들 유구한 전통은 일본사회의 여러 영역에서 불협화음을 일으키고 있으며 마사코의 시련은 그 한 징후로 볼 수 있다. 그런 점에서 마사코의 시련은 현대 일본사회에서 천황제의 존재방식에 대한 질문과 황실이 경험하고 있는 위기의 핵심과 맞닿아 있다.

Taking Princess Masakos prolonged ordeal as a vantage point, this article explores the gender issues involved in the postwar emperor system of Japan. Even though many Japanese wanted to see the marriage of Masako and Crown Prince Naruhito as signaling the beginning of a new era for the imperial house, Masakos first and foremost duty was giving birth to a babyson who will succeed the imperial throne. And Masakos difficulties of and eventual failure in fulfilling this duty lie at the core of her post-nuptial hardship. This hardcore logic of a patrilineal dynasty defies all the social changes, and it is not simply the ultimate cause of Masakos suffering but also the causes of current crisis of the imperial house and emperor system. Additionally, fundamental vulnerabilities of the symbolic emperor system which functions as a sort of theater state as well as the conservative groups adamant belief in the emperors unbroken descent line for ages eternal also challenge the emperor system, bringing about discords and conflicts in various realms of Japanese society. In this regard, Princess Masakos suffering is merely a symptom of the crisis that surrounds the imperial household, and reflecting on her ordeal leads to the question of how the Japanese emperor system is to survive in the future.
