Abstract
This Study aims to represent a typology of Korean adverbs according to sentence hierarchy. The hierarchy of sentence can be divided into four levels, that is, nuclear, core, clause, and sentence. The methods of classifying adverbs into four sentence levels are as follows : At first, the co-occurrence relation with grammatical forms of predicate is investigated. The order between adverbs is secondly examined. The occurring possibility of adverbs within conjoined sentences which are belong to four different levels is finally investigated. By these methods, Korean adverbs can be also classified into nuclear, core, clause, and sentence level.
The relationship with some other grammatical categories, expecially mood and negation, is studied in relation to typology of adverbs. On the constraint related with mood category, there is no constraint in the adverbs of nuclear and core level, but the adverbs of clause and sentence level have many constraints. In the case of negation category, the scope's differences of three Korean negatives are compared in terms of ability of negating four level's adverbs. Korean negative an is nuclear level one, -ci anhta is core, and-gusun anida is clause. These investigations can justify our classification of adverbs according to sentence hierarchies, also explain the interrelationships which exist among many linguistic constituents belonging to different sentence levels.
