한국과 미국의 경제관련 중등 교과서 비교 : 지식과 창의성 신장을 위한 읽기 이해 중심으로

Abstract

이 연구는 우리나라와 미국의 경제 관련 교과서를 지식과 창의성 신장을 위한 읽기 이해에 초점을 두어 비교 연구하였다. 교과서는 학생들이 지식을 습득하는 주요 창구의 역할을 한다. 특히 경제학과 같은 내용교과의 교과서에 제시된 개념이나 지식에 대한 기술이나 설명은 학생들이 내용을 이해하는 데 중요한 역할을 한다. 그런 점에서 내용교과인 경제관련 교과서를 통해서 개념의 설명, 내용의 제시, 기술의 정확성이나 응집성 등을 읽기 이해의 측면에서 살펴보았다. <고등학교 생활경제> 및 <고등학교 경제>, 그리고 미국의 Prentice Hall Economics: Principles in Action 교과서 내용 중에서 희소성과 기회비용을 소개하는 단원의 분석을 통해서 여러 가지 차이점이 드러났다. 전반적으로 우리나라 교과서들은 주요한 경제 개념을 압축적으로 제시함으로써 학생들이 개념을 명확하고 정확하게 이해하는 데 어려운 반면, 미국 교과서는 이야기 방식의 설명과 개념의 명확한 설명, 논리적 연관성을 가진 치밀한 내용 전개, 그리고 다양한 읽기 이해 장치를 통해서 학생들의 이해를 돕고 있다. 내용교과에서 교과서는 지식의 전달에 중요한 역할을 하는 만큼, 이 분야의 내용 전문가들뿐만 아니

라 학생들의 읽기 이해를 돕는다는 측면에서 읽기나 쓰기 분야의 전문가들이 함께 참여할 필요가 있으며, 내용교과의 교과서에 대한 읽기 이해 측면의 실증적 연구가 필요하다.

The main goal of this study is to examine how secondary school content-course textbooks in Korea and the US are written considering cognitive aspects of reading comprehension of the textbooks. Specifically, focusing on two major concepts of economics (scarcity and opportunity cost), the paper examined the explanation and description of these concepts and other related information in terms of how the textual description and contents of the books help students understand and learn information and knowledge through the textbooks. Focusing on three economics-related textbooks from two Korean publishers (High school Daily Economics, High school Economics), and an American publisher (Economics: Principles in Action), there appear some important differences in temrs of textual clarity, coherence, diversity, and descriptive styles of contents and other textual features such as examples, cases, graphic organizers to help students understand economic concepts. More research in the area of content-course textbooks seems to be necessary.
