"원대한 마음과 겸손은 양립가능한가?" : 아리스토텔레스 윤리학과 그리스도교 신앙의 충돌을 둘러싼 13세기 파리대학가의 논쟁

Abstract

원대한 마음과 겸손의 양립가능성 여부는 1277년 전후로 파리대학가에서 격렬한 논쟁의 대상이 되었던 문제이다. 본고는 1270년대에 이 문제를 다룬 가장 대표적인 세 학자, 즉 토마스 아퀴나스, 시제 브라방, 보나벤투라의 원전을 엄밀하게 분석하여 13세기 파리대학이라는 구체적인 공간에서 그리스도인 신학자와 철학자들이 아리스토텔레스 철학과 그리스도교 신앙이 충돌하는 문제에 직면하여 각각 어떤 입장을 취했는지를 밝힌다. 신학자였던 토마스와 보나벤투라와 달리 철학자였던 시제는 아리스토텔레스의 철학을 거의 전적으로 추종하여 겸손을 아리스토텔레스 윤리학의 한 개념과 동일시하고 원대한 마음과 양립가능하다고 주장하였다. 이로 인해 겸손에 관한 그의 주장은 1277년 단죄목록 제171조항의 표적이 되었다. 반면에 보나벤투라는 겸손에 관한 그리스도교의 가르침에 비추어 아리스토텔레스의 원대한 마음을 노골적으로 비판하였다. 이 두 사람과 다른 제 3의 길을 선택한 토마스 아퀴나스는 성서의 관점과 아리스토텔레스의 관점을 연결시키는 시도를 함으로써 겸손과 원대한 마음이 양립 가능하다고 주장하였다.

Is magnanimity compatible with humility? This is a question that caused violent disputations during the thirteenth century at Paris University regarding the conflict between Aristotles magnanimity and Christian humility. This paper analyses relevant texts written by three professors of Paris University: Thomas Aquinas, Siger of Brabant, and Bonaventure. It elucidates the respective positions taken by each author faced with the conflict between Aristotelian philosophy and Christian faith. Siger of Brabant, who almost entirely followed Aristotle's philosophy, identified humility with the Aristotelian virtue of temperance by arguing that humility is compatible with magnanimity. His opinion about humility became a target of the condemnation of 1277. Contrary to Siger, Bonaventure openly criticized Aristotelian magnanimity in light of Christian humility. Thomas Aquinas position differed with Siger of Brabant and Bonaventure by trying to connect the Christian humility and Aristotelian magnanimity. Through this, he argued that the two virtues are compatible.
