兪晩柱의 經書 인식과 학습

Abstract

This paper is focused on Yu Man-ju(兪晩柱)'s perception and study on Confucian classics through the analysis of Heumyeong(欽英). The distinct features of Yu Man-ju's understanding of Confucian classics found out in this paper are as follows. First, Yu Man-ju perceived Five classics as the historiography about ancient China and the ideal types of histmical description. So he thought that the one who want to be a good historian must study Five classics. Meanwhile Yu Man-ju considered Four books as the basic of the study of Confucian classics. Second, Yu Man-ju's perception of Confucian classics was systematized by the compilation of reading books for Confucian classics named Heumyeongdokbon(欽英讀本) . His compilation of Heumyeongdokbon was influenced by the form of the Five classics and Four books(四書五經) and Sipsamkyeongjuso(十三經注疏). Third, Yu Man-ju suggested two principles of the study of Confucian classics. One was studying mainly with the body of Confucian classics and the other was using the method of Dok(讀). Dok(讀) is a kind of reading form having the thorough knowledge of Confucian classics through intensive reading and memorization. And actually Yu Man-ju made an effort for practicing his principles when he studied Confucian classics.

兪晩柱(1755-1788)의 <欽英>은 18세기 조선 지식인들의 일기를 대표하는 자료로서, 자기서사로서의 일기의 특성을 구현하고 공사 영역 가운데서 자아의 위치를 탐구하며 사적 영역에 집중하고 있는 면모를 적극적으로 보여주고 있다는 점에서 주목할 만한 자료로 평가받고 있다. 이에 따라 <欽英>은 자료가 소개된 이래로 많은 연구자들의 관심의 대상이 되었고 그 결과 상당한 연구 성과가 축적되어 왔다. <흠영>에 관한 기존 연구들을 검토해 보면, 많은 연구자들이 <흠영>을 독서일기의 측면에서 주목해 왔음을 볼 수 있다. 주지하는 바와 같이 <흠영>에는 유만주가 읽었던 수많은 서적들의 주요 내용이 수록되어 있으며, 이는 유만주의 독서 활동, 학문 경향, 문학·예술적 취향 등을 파악하는데 매우 중요한 자료가 되고 있다. 그런데 지금까지 독서일기의 측면에서 <흠영>을 고찰한 연구는 대부분 한문학 분야에 집중되어 있으며, 그밖에 명·청을 비롯한 외국 수입 상황이나 서적 해제로서의 <흠영>의 성격 등을 고찰한 연구가 제출되었다.
