18세기 후반 의학계의 변화상 : <欽英>으로 본 조선후기 의학

Abstract

한국의학사 연구에서 조선시대는 각별한 의미를 갖는다. 현재에도 한국의 의료현장에서 전통의학을 바탕으로 환자들을 치료하는 한의학의 가반이 만들어진 시기가 이때에 해당한다고 할 수 있기 때문이다. 무엇보다도 世宗 대의 의서편찬 사업 이후 許浚이라는 걸출한 의사에 의해서 <東醫寶鑑>이 완성됨으로써 한국의 한의학이 완성되었다는 평가를 받는다. 물론 19세기 후반 李濟馬에 의한 四象醫學이 등장하기도 하지만, 적어도 한의학의 기본적인 틀은 17세기 전반부에 완성되었다고 이해하는 것이 일반적이다. 그러한 이유에서인지 의학사에 대한 연구는 대부분 <동의보감>의 완성 이후에 대해서는 매우 소략한 편이다. 이는 의학사에서 주로 다루고 있는 의료제도나 의학론 등의 분야에서 고르게 나타나는 현상이기도 하다.

Heum Yeong, a diary Yu Man-ju (1755~1788) wrote from 1775, is a collection of his book reviews and materials on actual life in Hanyang, the capital of Joseon, in the late 18th century. Even though he was a youth who prepared for a civil service examination and a member of the Noron faction, he read many writings by Silhak scholars (scholars of the Realist School of Confucianism) and had considerable interest in knowledge of miscellaneous matters as well as Juja Neo-confucianism. He left a lot of records on medicine and they were prut of his efforts to apply medicine to actual life beyond his intellectual interest. For such reasons, Heum Yeong reflected changes in the medical world in the late 18th century. What was the most notable characteristics was rapid commercialization of medicine. Yu Man-ju visited many doctors to treat diseases of his family and made transactions with multiple drug stores in order to procure medicinal ingredients prescribed by the doctors. This was a phenomenon resulting from commercialization of pharmaceuticals centered on Hanyang.
