< 純宗實紀> 의 고종시대 인식과 을사늑약의 외부대신 직인 강탈 문제

Abstract

<純宗實紀>는 1926년 6월 순종의 죽음을 추도하기 위해서 발간한 <新民>의 특집 제14호이다. 이 책에 실린 글은 회고담이거나 기자가 쓴 기사이다. 이 글의 대다수는 이미 알려진 사실이거나 글쓴이의 주관이 반영된 한계가 있지만 여기서 몇 가지 중요한 역사적 사실을 확인할 수 있다. 먼저 우리는 개화를 주도했던 박영효와 같은 친일개화파의 회고담에서 이들의 현실 인식에 한계가 있음을 확인할 수 있다. 이들은 개항 이후 정국을 대원군과 민왕후의 권력투쟁으로 인식하고 이 때문에 나라가 망해갔다고 했다. 이들은 고종의 정치력과 일본의 침략성을 부차적인 것으로 취급했다. 이밖에 박영효의 회고 즉 1884년 4월 무렵 이노우에 가오리(井上馨) 일본 외무상이 자신에게 밀사를 파견했다는 사실은 정변 주도자와 일본과의 사전 모의설에 관한 중요한 증언이다. 특히 을사늑약 체결 당시 외부참서관이었던 어윤적의 회고는 외부대신 직인에 대한 새로운 증언이다. 이 증언은 조약서에 한국의 외부대신이 스스로 날인했다며 한국 측의 자발성을 강조한 일본의 주장이 조작임을 증명하고 있다. 이용직의 회고는 제3자를 통해 알려진 한일병합의 불법성을 직접 증언한 또 다른 자료라는 점에서 의미가 있다. 이와 같이 <純宗實記>은 자료적인 한계는 있지만 부족한 한국근대사 관련 자료를 보완하는데 나름의 의미가 있다.

<SoonJongsilgi(純宗實紀)> is featured Article No. 14 of <Sinmin(新民)> published in June 1926 to mourn for the death of SoonJong(純宗). This book consists of a personal retrospective or articles written by journalists. The majority of this article is the already known or have limitations to reflect the subjectivity of the author, but here we can confirm some important facts. First, we can see that there is a limit to the recognition of reality in the pro-Japanese Enlightenment-Faction(親日開化派)s recollection like Parkyounghyo(朴永孝). They recognized only the political situation after the opening as the power struggle between Daewongun(大院君) and Min-queen(閔王后) and understood that the country was leaning because of this. they treated GoJong(高宗)'s political ingenuity and Japan's invasion as secondary. In addition the recollection of Parkyounghyo that about April 1884 the Japanese Foreign Minister Inoue Gaori(井上馨) has dispatched emissary to him is an important testimony about the preparatory operations between Gapsin Coup(甲申政變)' reader and Japan.
