무슬림의 그리스도교 비판에 대한 토마스 아퀴나스의 변증 : <신앙의 근거들>을 중심으로

Abstract

중세 세계는 유대교, 그리스도교, 이슬람교 문화 간에 끊임없는 교류가 이루어진 무대였다. 요한네스 필로포노스(Joannes Philoponos(+575) 혹은 다마스커스의 요한네스(Joannes Damascenus, 680-754)와 같은 그리스도교 사상가들은 이슬람과 유대교의 변증 신학 형성에 핵심적인 역할을 했다. 이슬람 사상이 유대사상에 미친 영향도 지대했다. 유대 철학자 마이모니데스는 이슬람 사상가인 파라비와 그의 후계자들 그리고 아베로에스를 모르고는 거의 이해하기 힘들다. 그런가 하면, 12세기부터 이슬람철학과 유대철학이 그리스도교 사상가들에게 엄청난 영향을 끼쳤다는 것은 상세하게 말할 필요가 없을 만큼 잘 알려진 사실이다. 이런 사정을 잘 아는 역사가와 철학자들은 중세를 불관용과 미신의 암흑시대라고 부르는 데 익숙한 대중들과는 달리 이 시대를 유대교, 그리스도교, 이슬람교간의 지적 교류의 황금시대로 칭송한다.

This paper studies De rationibus fidei (On reasons for our faith against the Muslims) written by Thomas Aquinas (1224/25-1274), the great Christian theologian of the Middle Ages, which shows a good example of his contribution to discussions between Muslims and Christians, and explores implications for interreligious dialogue today. Aquinas wrote this work because his fellow friar who lived in Antioch of Syria as missionary asked him to respond to the questions that confronted him through contact with Muslims and Eastern Christians. Except for the question about the purgatory, all the questions concern the Trinity and Christology. Therefore, this work is a good place to learn about Aquinas` answers to Muslims` criticism of Christianity. This paper carefully analyses De rationibus fidei and shows that Aquinas` balanced and prudent approach to Muslims` criticism of Christian faith provides an invaluable insight for the dialogue between Christians and Muslims today.
